The Communications Technology Program is a unique two-year program of study focusing on all areas of the industry. Since 1968 we have provided students with the technical skills needed to enter the fast-paced world of telecommunications. The first two semesters students will learn basic ac/dc electronics and digital electronics, as well as digital carrier, station installations, cable fundamentals, copper splicing and fiber optics splicing. Data Communications will be an important part of the first year of study which will include Local Area Networks (LAN) and installation and operations of Key and PBX phone systems. You will study and be prepared for the Broadband Premise Specialist (BPS) certification through the Society of Cable Telecommunications Engineers (SCTE). During the second year of study the students will test for NWKTC certifications in eight areas.
The college has excellent labs with industry equipment for students to train on. In our labs we have Nortel Network' s popular central office switches which include three working DMS-10' s, one SL-100, and one DMS-100. The college also has one MTX (Mobile Telephone Xchange), seven AMPS/TDMA (Advanced Mobile Phone Service/Time Division Multiple Access) cell sites, 1 CDMA (Code Division Multiple Access) cell site, and a very intensive T1 Test lab. This equipment will provide the hands-on training needed to meet the demands of the industry.
Students may earn the Broadband Premise Specialist certification through the Society of Cable Telecommunications Engineers. Student can earn certifications from NWKTC in eight areas: Transmissions, Data Communications, Voice Communications, VoIP (Voice over the Internet Protocol), SONET, IP Networking and VPN's (Internet Protocol Networking and Virtual Private Networks), CDMA ONE (Code Division Multiple Access, 2nd Generation), CDMA 2000 and High Speed Mobile Internet (3rd Generation).
A Master Certification, Telecommunications Network Specialist, is offered by NWKTC, for completion of all 8 courses with an 80% or higher on all final exams.
