Featured Students of the Month

April

Engineering Technology student Matthew R. Isley and Welding student RJ Kleweno are the NWKTC April Students of the Month.

Matt is a 2006 graduate of LaCrosse High School. He has also been named a candidate for the 2007-2008 Student of the Year; and will be inducted into the National Technical Honor Society at a ceremony on April 15.

Matt, 20, will receive his Associates of Applied Science degree this May. He was selected as the Student of the Month by Instructor Daniel Ordonez.

“Matt has a great attitude and he is always going the extra mile to get things done right and precise,” said Ordonez. Matt will be a very successful engineering technician and if he decides to pursue his engineering degree, he will be a successful engineer.”

Matt was selected by his peers as a department representative for the NWKTC Student of the Year. The selection process includes submission of a resume, essay and face-to-face interview to a committee made up of five community members. A banquet sponsored by First National Bank of Goodland to honor all 15 candidates will be held at 6:30 pm tonight at the Sugar Hills Golf Club in Goodland. The Student of the Year will be named at the NWKTC Commencement Ceremony on May 23.

Matt has also been inducted into the National Technical Honor Society, America’s
highest award for excellence in career and technical education. Students are chosen for National Technical Honor Society membership based on: Scholastic achievement, honesty, dependability, responsibility, leadership, citizenship, cooperation, initiative, interest in learning, pride in work and a desire to pursue a career.

Following graduation, Matt will begin his career as an engineering technician with JeHN Engineering in Arvada, Colo. near Denver.

RJ, 20, is Ian dalia native and former Idalia High School student. He will receive both his Associates of Applied Science degree and Technical Certificate this May.

He was selected for Student of the Month by Instructor Jake Conger.

“RJ has been selected because of his work ethics and professionalism around the shop,” Conger said. “He is a great leader and can find the easy way to fix projects. He likes to think outside of the box.”

Following graduation, RJ plans to travel and begin a career as a welder.

March

Congratulations to Joshua Richter for being selected the NWKTC March Student of the Month.

Josh is a Communications Technology student. He graduated from Lakin High School in Lakin, Kansas. Joshua, 29, graduated from the Business Technology department in 2007 and plans to receive his Associates degree in Communications Technology in May 2009. Joshua is the CT representative in Student Government and is involved with many student functions.

Communications Technology instructor Scott Waugh selected Joshua because he is “an outstanding student and has a terrific work ethic.”

“Josh is usually the first to volunteer for any project and he displays tremendous enthusiasm toward gaining new knowledge and experience,” Waugh said. “He is a leader within the department and on campus.”

February

Goodland High school graduate Carlos Soto, and Goodland resident Cindy Salmans have each been named the Northwest Kansas Technical College February Student(s) of the Month.

Soto, 20, is a 2007 graduate of Goodland High School and is in the Computer Graphics Technology program at NWKTC.

He was selected by CGT Instructor Shannan Garret because: “Carlos is very conscientious and has only missed one day all year. He turns work in on time, is polite, helpful, pleasant, good solid worker, does good work, works well with others, versatile, and has a great insight into the field.”

Soto said he plans to pursue a computer graphics career in Denver or Phoenix once he gets his associate’s degree in 2009. But for now, he’s happy with getting his education at Northwest Kansas Technical College.

“Every day is exciting and there’s always something new to learn,” Soto said of the Computer Graphics Technology program at NWKTC.

Salmans is a Benkelman, Neb. native who has lived in Goodland for the past 10 years. The 30-year-old Business Technology student is a married mother of three children.

Business Instructor Bonnie Hawks said of Salmans: “My selection is the result of having Cindy as a student for one entire semester and recognizing that she has excellent attendance, maintains a 4.0 GPA, is a leader within the class, and is diligent in carrying out her responsibilities as Departmental Club treasurer and as chairperson of the Club’s annual scholarship fundraiser.”

Salmans said she has enjoyed the close family atmosphere of the NWKTC campus. After receiving her associate’s degree in May, Salmans plans to continue living and raising her family in Goodland and working in an office environment.

January

Cosmetology student Karissa C. Hill is January Student of the Month.

COS Instructor Christa Bergsma said Karissa is an excellent student with perfect attendance, but it is her drive to go above and beyond her studies that prompted Bergsma to select Karissa as the NWKTC January Student of the Month.

“Karissa is an exceptional leader and a Student Ambassador in our program,” Bergsma said. “Karissa is also very active outside the Cosmetology Program. She participates in all the NWKTC intramural sports, works at two local businesses part-time, and is a very active helper in all of our department fundraisers. We are proud to recognize Karissa as the cosmetology student of the month.”

Karissa, who is a Quinter High School graduate, said the best thing about attending NWKTC is interacting with the clients she has developed. “I love seeing them every week,” she said.

Karissa said that after graduation, she hopes to work in a hair salon and eventually open her own business. The ambitious student is also interested in going into massage therapy and envisions offering both cosmetology and massage services at her business.

Collision Repair student Jeremy Steimel is a January Student of the Month.

CR Instructor Daryl Hoss said Jeremy is not only eager to learn new things but is also diligent about working on the skills he already has. Those traits and others prompted Hoss to name Jeremy the NWKTC January Student of the Month.

“Jeremy demonstrates leadership abilities and strives for perfection in everything he dose,” Hoss said. “He is enthusiastic to gain knowledge of new practices and polish the abilities he has now. Jeremy works well with others and is always willing to jump in and help anyone who needs it. He has a good common sense approach to any task done.”

Jeremy, who is a sophomore at the college, hails from Manter and is a Stanton County High School graduate. He said he plans to move to McPherson and work at Conklin Cars in Hutchinson after his June graduation. Ultimately, however, Jeremy wants to own his own business.
