NWKTC names “Student of the Year” candidates

Fifteen outstanding students have been selected as candidates for the Northwest Kansas Technical College “Student of the Year.”

Those students are: Anthony Banman, Automotive Technology; Laura Berning, Cosmetology; Tyler Biernacki, Computer Graphics Technology; Dwain Dent, Welding; Tony Escarcega, Heating & Cooling Technology; Clinton Hansen; Electronics & Computer Technology; Toby Hill, Carpentry; Matt Isley, Engineering Technology; Tonya Knapp, Medical Assistant; Jesse Miller, Communications Technology; Matthew Nothnagel, Telecommunication Network Analyst; Freddy Sanchez Resendiz, Collision Repair; Heather Simmons, Business Technology; Nathan Simmons, Electrical Technology; Dirk Vapenik, Diesel Technology.

Graduating students in good academic standing are selected by their peers as candidates for “Student of the Year.” Students from each department nominate a student and rate them on criteria such as ability to get along with others, attitude, judgment, dependability, honesty, maturity and leadership. The student with the most points is chosen to represent the department.

Nominees have to submit a resume and an essay on  “Qualities of the Student of the Year” to a five-member selection committee made up of community members. The committee also interviewed each candidate. The committee was comprised of Susan Bellamy, vice president of First National Bank; Marty Melia, KLOE announcer; Kevin Rasure, Sherman County Commissioner and Goodland business owner; Barb Winston, owner of Ahead of the Times beauty salon; and JoAnn Wahrman, NWKTC Head Librarian.

A banquet sponsored by First National Bank of Goodland to honor the candidates was held April 8 at the Sugar Hills Golf Club. The “Student of the Year” will be announced at the NWKTC Commencement Ceremony at the Max Jones Field House at 1:30 p.m. on May 23.

Northwest Kansas Technical College confers technical certificates and Associates of Applied Science degrees in 16 programs. More than 250 students attend the technical and general education classes offered at NWKTC. Northwest Kansas Technical College was established in 1964 as a public area vocational technical school by the Kansas State Department of Education. The school received its status as a college in 2001 and is now governed by the Kansas Board of Regents. Northwest Kansas Technical College is accredited by the Higher Learning Commission of the North Central Association of Colleges and Schools, one of six regional institutional accreditors in the United States. Communications Technology Kstate Agreement

Partnership with K-State at Salina enables NWKTC students to transfer credits for a Bachelor of Science in Technology Management degree at K-State

A new partnership has developed between Kansas State University at Salina and Northwest Kansas Technical to provide two articulation agreements.

These agreements allow students to obtain an associate of applied science degree from Northwest Kansas Technical College and complete the remaining two years of a bachelor’s degree through K-State distance education.

The new agreements were signed at Northwest Kansas Technical College on March 31 and include:

  • Associate of Applied Science degree in Computer Graphics Technology to bachelor’s degree in Technology Management
  • Associate of Applied Science degree in Communications Technology to bachelor’s degree in Technology Management

Representatives from Northwest Kansas Technical College present at the signing included Ken Clouse, president; Brenda Chatfield, director of instructional studies; Derek Reilley, communications technology instructor; and Shannan Garrett, computer graphics instructor.

K-State representatives included Betty Stevens, associate dean of continuing education; Jennifer Pfortmiller, coordinator; Dennis Kuhlman, dean and professor of technology and aviation at K-State at Salina; and Don Von Bergen, dean of arts, science and business at K-State at Salina.  

This recent agreement is in addition to a March agreement between NWKTC and Pittsburgh State University. The articulation agreement makes is possible for NWKTC students with an Associate of Applied Science degree to enter Pittsburg State’s Bachelor of Applied Science program.
