Resources CounselingStudents may receive assistance in personal or career counseling. Our counseling services include referral service, academic counseling and aptitude testing and interest inventory. Resource Center Developmental classes in math, reading and study skills are available at the resource center. Assistance is provided in test taking skills and it is a place students may come to study. Computer Lab A computer lab located in the administration building is available for students to work on their computer skills and for their personal use to access email and the internet. 06-07 NWKTC CATALOG 43 Tutoring Student tutors are provided through the college work study program to tutor a student with classroom assignments and studying for tests and quizzes. Academic Testing Students are given aptitude tests to determine academic skills in math, reading, and career skills. These tests are administered individually or in groups with results being discussed with the student. AA Support Groups Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday, and Saturday at 8 p.m., at 1013 Center, Goodland; Tuesday and Thursday at 8:30 p.m. Colby at the City Building and on Wednesday and Saturday on 6th Street in Colby; Thursday at 8:30 p.m. St. Francis; Tuesday at 8:00 p.m. in Atwood. Vocational Rehabilitation Kansas, Colorado and Nebraska vocational rehabilitation services are provided for students with handicaps and disabilities. Career counseling, financial assistance, tutoring and personal counseling are among the services provided for vocational rehabilitation. Contact the student services office for more information. SER Corporation (Securing Permanent Employment and Training for Seasonal farm workers in Kansas) SER Corp is funded by the Department of Labor and there is no charge to the client for this service. To be eligible you must have worked in farm related occupations within the past two years and meet certain income guidelines. Information about the nearest SER office is available in the Financial Aid Office. 06-07 NWKTC CATALOG 35 Work Opportunities for Rural Kansans (WORKS) This program helps farmers, ranchers and their families to make a transition from farming and ranching to non-farm employment. Information about the contacts for WORKS is available in the Financial Aid Office. Vocational Rehabilitation NWKTC is approved for Veterans' educational benefits for students eligible for such benefits. Contact your local veterans' representative for application forms. Workforce Investment ACT (W.I.A.) Students may be eligible for assistance with tuition, books and supplies. Applicants must apply for assistance before enrolling and meet financial guidelines established by WIA. Typically targeted individuals are dislocated workers, displaced homemakers, single parents, low income family, and non high school graduates. Contact the Financial Aid Office for further information. Veterans Administration NWKTC is approved by Veterans Administration for students eligible to receive benefits. Students receive monthly payments based on eligibility. Contact your local VA Representative for appropriate application forms. Bureau of Indian Affairs Students may check the Bureau of Indian Affairs website at: http://www.doi.gov/bureauindian- affairs.html for eligibility guidelines. Kansas Board of Regents, Foster Care Tuition Waiver Applicant must meet the following eligibility requirements: Applicant was in custody of Kansas Department of Social and Rehabilitation Services on the date they reached their 18th birthday; or Prior to age 18, graduated from high school or fulfilled the requirements of a GED while in foster care placement and custody of the Kansas Department of Social and Rehabilitation Services; or Adopted from a foster care placement on or after applicants 16th birthday; and Applicant has been accepted to a Kansas educational institution within 2 years following the date they graduated from a Kansas high school or fulfilled the requirements of a GED certificate. The Kansas Department of Social and Rehabilitation Services Central office must verify applicants foster care status. Forms to verity the foster care status are available in the Office of Financial Assistance at NWKTC. |
